Organisational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.
This job opening announcement broadcasts multiple internship opportunities with OCHA in New York. The intern, under the general guidance of a primary supervisor, shall be assigned within the Country-Based Pooled Funds section.
Under the overall leadership of the Chief of Section, the intern will carry out the following duties:
- Prepares background information, talking points and key messages related to Country-Based Pooled Funds (CBPFs) for use in OCHA Senior Management briefing materials;
- Supports regular outreach and dialogue with key stakeholders including other UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, and prepare related background material.
- Prepares or contribute to the preparation of various written reports, documents and communications, e.g. drafts sections of studies, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents, briefings, case studies, presentations, correspondence related to request for information on OCHA’s policies related to Country-Based Pooled Funds (CBPFs).
- Works in conjunction with the primary focal point on Partnerships and Governance on policy and partnerships issues related to CBPFs; keeps abreast of latest developments, liaises with other humanitarian organizations, donors, etc., ensures appropriate monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
- Reviews and provides support to policy issues related to CBPFs and researches data and information required to validate statements.
- Participates in work groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other partners on humanitarian financing and emergency relief-related matters.
- Provides support to technical assistance and other field missions.
- Participates in work groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners on humanitarian financing related matters.
- Establishes a document repository for the section and generate a public library of relevant documents for the section, Fund Managers and external stakeholders.
- Supports maintenance of internal databases and updating of contact lists.
- Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Experiences : United nations
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
Have graduated with a university degree
Applicants who are unable to commence the internship within one year of graduation shall not be accepted.
The University degree must be in the area of political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or in a related field.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
English and French are the official working languages of the United Nations secretariat. For this position, fluency (oral and written) in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
