Before the colonial invasion of our country, Zanzibar had its own education system. A traditional education system that emphasized empowering young people and making young people understand, value and cherish their indigenous culture.

Traditional education included, among other things, the way of life in the community, traditional medicine, the manufacture of various equipment to produce goods such as agricultural implements, fisheries, livestock and so on. In general, the traditional education system was mature and when the colonists invaded our country they found the society ready with its own system of life.

When the colonists came to Zanzibar, the first thing they did was try to change the way of life that would suit their needs. The colonists decided to establish a western education system with the aim of finding a few people who would be able to serve the colonial and sultanate rule that existed at the time. Thus, education was provided on the basis of class and ethnicity, depending on the status of that class or tribe before colonial and sultanate rule.

The history of western education in Zanzibar dates back to 1890 when the first school known as Sir Euan Smith Madressa was established by the Indian community for the education of their children. In 1907, the monarchy established a school for the children of their own tribe. In 1920, English rule began to educate the masses on a racist basis.

People of Asian and Arab descent were enrolled in primary and secondary education for 12 years. Most people of African descent were enrolled in only four years of primary education.

Due to the discrimination against the poorest Africans in the provision of education, and due to the importance of education in the development of the individual and the nation as a whole, the ASP in its struggle for independence made it clear in its manifesto that it is holding the reins of power. The leadership of the country, the Government led by the ASP will provide education free of charge and without discrimination of any kind.

After failing all attempts to claim peace through peaceful means, the patriotic people of Zanzibar under the leadership of the ASP Party and the President of the ASP, the late Mzee Abeid Amani karume, staged a Revolution on 12 January 1964, to overthrow colonial rule and sultanate.

Immediately after taking office, the First President of Zanzibar, the late Mzee Abeid Amani Karume, on September 23, 1964, announced that education in Zanzibar would be provided free of charge and without discrimination of any kind.

Since then, governments of all phases under the leadership of the ASP then and now the Revolutionary Party (CCM) have been implementing the policy of free education and great and exemplary achievements have been achieved.

After the Great Revolution, the Government inherited the 8 – 4 – 2 colonial education system, namely eight years of primary education, four years of regular secondary and two years of high school.

After 40 years of revolutionary education, the education system of education changed to 3 – 7 – 3 – 2 – 2, namely three years of preparatory education, seven years of primary education, three years of secondary original, two years of regular secondary and two years of high school.

Seven years of primary education and three pre-secondary years make compulsory education, which is the right of every child in this country.
