ECZ is a short term of Examinations Council of Zambia. It was established in 1983 to conduct and regulate examination and award to students in zambia.
An Act of Parliament established the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) in 1983 to set and conduct examinations and award certificates to successful candidates.

Before this enactment, the Ministry of Education and Culture under the Examinations Section used to conduct the examinations.
After the enactment, the section continued to perform the function of conducting the examinations while simultaneously developing an institutional framework and job descriptions.
The full launch and operationalisation of the Examinations Council of Zambia was in 1987 as a semi-autonomous public institution (Parastatal).
Prior to the establishment of the Council, the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate in the United Kingdom was the examining and awarding body.
The syndicate’s examinations catered for many countries and consequently it was not easy for such examinations to reflect the needs of Zambia.
The country was subject to the curricula, syllabi and regulations of the syndicate with little say in the general policy of the syndicate examinations.
In view of this, it became necessary to reach a decision to localise School Certificate examinations. Consequential to this was the need to develop capacity in the construction, administration and marking of examinations.
This gave rise to the establishment of the Examinations Council of Zambia.
FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNCIL
The main functions of the Council as stipulated in the Examinations Council of Zambia Act, No. 15 of 1983 are to:
- To conduct examinations
- To process the results;
- To award certificates and diplomas to candidates who pass examinations conducted by the council;
- To carry out relevant research in examinations;
- To advise any public institution on the development and use of any system of testing or examining when requested to do so;
- To formulate syllabuses for examinations; promote the international recognition of qualifications conferred by the Council;
- To approve or reject appointments of examiners;
- To organise training courses, or arrange for the training of, examiners, markers, supervisors, invigilators and other persons connected with examinations;
- To invite any person or body in or outside Zambia to assist the Council in the conduct of examinations.
ECZ examination Fee 2022
Following Government pronouncement of free education in Public and Grant Aided schools, the following is the guidance with regard to payment of examination fees; The following shall not pay examination fees:
- Candidates in Public Schools;
- Candidates in Grant Aided schools.
Candidates in private schools shall pay the following amounts as examination fees:

What is the pass mark for Grade 9?
National promotion requirements are that learners from Grade 7-9 must achieve over 50 percent in one home language, over 40 percent in one first additional language, over 40 percent for maths, over 40 percent in three other subjects and at least 30 percent in two other subjects.
Grade 9 forms the foundation for the rest of the maths you will do in school (and hopefully university) and so it is very important to understand the concepts and techniques. I always like to think of it as a toolbox of tools that you get to fix problems with.
How do you study for grade 9 exams?
Here is my top 10 study tips and tricks:
- Exercise, exercise and exercise! Did I mention exercise?
- Do as many examples as possible. Start with the easy ones and build yourself up. The difficult problems need understanding of the easier ones first.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you are shy, ask a friend or go to the teacher after class.
- Make stories and rhymes! Maths can be very creative and is only scientific as you make it!
- There will be chapters that you are better with and there will be some that you struggle with. This is normal.Not everyone can use a hammer as good as they can use a bore. Do not let the bad chapters make you lose hope!
- Make sure to understand the basic concepts rather than memorizing the steps. This is especially applicable for algebra (simplification of expressions). Make sure to know how to use the tools as well as where you are allowed to use them.
- Never be afraid to do more work than what the teacher gave you. This will only help build your toolbox.
- Remember that variables (the alphabet inside of maths) are the same as numbers and all the same rules apply to them.
- Do not be afraid to ask for help!
- Go over your mistakes and make sure to understand why it was wrong. Most marks in exams and tests are lost due to silly mistakes.
