The project manager will be responsible for managing and delivering all aspects of the project ‘A National Conversation’, which will focus on a range of issues including good governance, climate change and gender equality. Building off previous phases of A National Conversation, the project manager will be expected to deliver high quality project results, in particular ensuring the project has the maximum possible impact on partners and audiences.

Working closely with BBC Media Action’s production, research and learning and training teams, the project manager will play a key role in designing and implementing this new phase of the project. This will include planning, managing, and delivering project outcomes through media outputs and media-sector capacity building, with a continuous focus on learning, monitoring and improving how we support governance in Tanzania.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To deliver the project on time, to budget and to the highest standards of quality, effectiveness, impact and relevance, meeting objectives clearly defined in the project proposal
  • To take responsibility for the co-ordination, planning, budgeting, reporting and general management of all aspects of the project. This includes working with BBC Media Action staff in Tanzania and London to define and develop programme direction, strategies and activities
  • Work closely with production, research, and training teams to ensure that project objectives are being met
  • Maintaining external relationships with project partners, donors, and other stakeholders, representing the project to the highest professional standards
  • Ensure all project activities are fully compliant with donor regulations and BBC Media Action policies and editorial guidelines
  • Support the project and production teams to understand issues related to the project’s thematic areas, and the role of media and communication
  • Work closely with the research team to ensure activities (including formative research, monitoring and evaluation of outputs and baselines and end line quantitative data) are in line with project objectives
  • May include line management of a project officer
  • Prepare donor and internal reports on project progress and impact and lesson learning data
    Commission, write and manage the production of multimedia content on project progress, lessons learned and impact
  • Understand and comply with BBC Media Action’s Safeguarding Policy and the staff Code of Conduct
  • Participate in relevant mandatory training on safeguarding and respect at work

Required skills and knowledge:

  • At least three years’ experience in international development, with proven professional experience or educational background in governance or other relevant area
  • Experience directly managing all elements of the project budget cycle – design, budget development and management, work planning and schedule building, implementation of activities, monitoring progress against objectives, reviewing and reporting
  • Proven experience directly managing budgets of at least $100,000 per year
  • Experience of working on Irish Aid-funded projects would be an advantage
  • Ability to make sound judgments on editorially sensitive programme issues
  • Experience in line management of staff
  • Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues in Tanzania
  • Experience working with, or understanding of, child protection regulations desirable
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a proven track record in forming effective relationships with a range of partners and stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent written communication skills, including experience writing project briefs, reports, terms of reference and other project documents

Job purpose:

We are looking for two mentor/producer-presenters to produce and present a nationally broadcast radio show and also to deliver in-depth mentoring on radio production to staff at several radio partner stations throughout the country. The training and ongoing support to partner stations aims at building their capacity to produce varied, high-quality, and editorially robust radio programmes.

The successful candidate will work closely with the senior producer to create radio outputs that reach the highest editorial and professional standards in line with BBC editorial policy and production guidelines. The successful candidate will also work with the senior trainer mentor and partnerships development manager to develop training plans that meet the needs of radio producers in line with a range of project objectives, and with the overall goal of improving the quality and capacity of the media sector in Tanzania especially on issues around governance, gender, and climate change.

The post holder will be required to spend at least 60% of their time in the field, working with radio producers at partner stations throughout Tanzania.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To develop and deliver the partner training and capacity-building elements of BBC Media Action’s A
  • National Conversation project: to reach the highest standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, impact and relevance, meeting objectives clearly defined in the project proposal
  • To be the voice of a potential national radio show, presenting the programme in an engaging style that appeals to existing audience and attracts new listeners
  • Plan, script, produce and edit programme items and full editions of the programme
  • To work with the senior trainer mentor and partnerships development manager to design a formal and on the job production guide for partner radios and to independently deliver these trainings to radio producers at assigned partner station. This document will guide the entire period of mentorship and serve as a frame of reference for evaluating the trainer/mentor’s performance.
  • To deliver a series of training workshops and events, using agreed training guide
  • To deliver one-on-one mentoring to young reporters and journalists at assigned partner organisations. The trainer/mentor will provide constructive feedback at the end of each assignment
  • Work closely with senior producers and project team to develop topics and create its work plan ready for production
  • To plan, arrange and conduct field interviews for the national programme
  • To work closely with radio partner producers on all aspects of training and programme production to ensure maximum ownership
  • To ensure that findings from research and audience feedback are used to refine and improve projects outputs
  • To ensure all project activities meet BBC standards, as well as delivering the projects development objectives
  • To provide technical linkages between NGO experts and local radio partners in development of radio products and manage relationships between both

  • Participate in relevant mandatory training on safeguarding and respect at work

  • A recognised Journalism/Mass Communication Degree from a reputable university or college
  • Fluent in English and Swahili with ability to write reports and scripts in these languages

Job purpose:

The research officer (RO) will support the research coordinator and research manager in the coordination and implementation of research under the project ‘A National Conversation’, that will focus on a range of issues including good governance, climate change and gender equality. The RO will liaise with the production and capacity strengthening teams, local partners and programme participants to support the design, coordination and implementation of research activities to inform and evaluate the project. He/she will make sure that all activities are implemented in a timely and effective manner.

At times, the RO may be expected to work flexibly across a range of genres and across all media, irrespective of their own area of specialism, in line with business needs and to positively develop their understanding of the wider media development environment. As a member of a global team of research and communication practitioners, the officer will have the opportunity to contribute to the research and learning group’s work on the synthesis and analysis of best practice for Media Action’s projects.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To manage all research activities under the project
  • To develop the research and learning approach and plan
  • To develop the research designs for each study to be undertaken
  • To support in the design of research for training projects and mass media programming, comprising formative research, pre-testing of media materials, and impact evaluation
  • To support in the commissioning and monitoring of all research inputs (e.g., quantitative surveys, focus group sessions, case studies, etc.), working to budget and deadline requirements
  • To conduct literature reviews across a range of issues/ themes and ethnographic studies in the field
  • To conduct fieldwork, including focus group discussions and in-depth interviews in the field
  • To conduct pilots and pre-testing of content and media output in the field
  • Liaise with in-country field agencies monitoring quality control and the timely delivery of research projects

The senior producer will be responsible for the creative direction, ensuring that episodes are engaging, informative and able to influence uptake of positive behaviours in audiences.

The senior producer will be expected to lead the development of ideas for pilot content (radio and social media) to be pretested with sample audiences during the project’s inception phase. S/he will also be expected to play a key role in the development of new partnerships with radio stations, and to engage regularly with staff at the stations once those relationships are established. The senior producer will have to work closely with colleagues in research and learning, to ensure insights from research studies are used properly to guide the development and production of the project’s multimedia content.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day production of radio and digital content
  • Ensure the project’s multimedia content meets BBC editorial and production standards
  • Lead on long-term planning and strategic direction for radio and social media content
  • Manage the production team
  • Closely work with the BBC Media Action project manager and the research team to ensure that content is reaching, engaging and creating impact among target audiences
  • Embed learning from research studies and audience feedback into radio and social media content and formats
  • Script and oversee presentation of radio shows and digital content, including lives on Facebook and Instagram
  • Develop and maintain contacts within government, development partners and the media sector to ensure the project’s multimedia content has access to key contributors and is of the highest possible quality

  • Experience of audio mixing radio content for broadcast on national radio stations
  • A demonstrated high level of attention to detail and commitment to leading production of high-quality content
