The Gauteng Department of Education ensures that all learners in the Gauteng Province get obligatory basic education by providing children with access to excellent teaching, learning, and evaluation.
It is essential to be acquainted with the GDE online registration 2024/2025 procedure. As a parent or guardian, you should also be aware of the papers that must be filed, how to choose a school for your child/ward, and what to do if your child/ward is refused admission to a school.

When you begin the Gauteng Department of Education online registration procedure for your kid, three stages or processes must be completed.
These phases are as follows:
- Entering the details of the parent/legal guardian
- Entering the learner’s details
- Applying to a School
Step 1: Entering the parent/legal guardian’s information
- As a parent, if you are a first-time user, you must click the “Apply for 2022/2023” button once you are on the GDE’s official website. Before you can make any applications, you must first fill out the form on the page that appears when you click.
- When the “Enter Parent Information” form appears, you must fill out every necessary field marked with an asterisk. You would be asked to give information such as your municipality, street name and number, phone number, and so on.
- After that, you must provide a valid South African ID number. When you do this, the system is automatically setup to provide the names linked with each identification number. As a result, when you apply, make sure you have your ID as the parent and the learner’s ID handy.
- During the application process, you will be required to establish a username and password that will be used to get access to the main application. Make sure the password is unique and difficult to forget.
- After your account is established, you will get an SMS containing your username and password. So, if you have any questions or encounter any difficulties, you may always utilize it to access the portal.
Keep in mind that after you complete the first stage of the application procedure and everything checks out, you will be forwarded to the next step. The color shown in the first step would change to green at this point.
Step 2: Enter learner information
Once you’ve arrived at the learner’s page, do the following:
- Enter the student’s information. This is critical since no application can be submitted until the learner’s information is input. You would be needed to fill in information such as if the student is South African or not, the identity number, province, and the present grade.
- After you’ve completed all of the necessary fields, click the “Submit Learner Details” button.
If you complete everything correctly, when you click that button, the color shown on the second stage will change to green, and you will be immediately routed to the third step.
Step 3: Applying to a School
While the learner’s name would have been shown automatically on the website, you would only have needed to complete the following:
1. Choose an application choice. You must choose one of the following options: home, job, sibling, or prior school (but note that the last option which is the school is only meant for those who are applying for Grade 8).
Take note of these when you apply:
- If you choose the “home/work address” option, the system will automatically filter the schools and ask you to choose one that is near to your home or work address.
- In addition, if you choose the “sibling” option, you will be able to apply to a school where your kid has a sibling in Grades 1-6 and/or Grades 8-11. This implies that you will need to give information on that sibling in order for this option to be selected.
- Then, if you choose the “previous school” option, you must give the name of the school where the kid you are enrolling for is now in Grade 7.
After you have submitted your first application, you have the following options:
- Apply to a school of your choosing. The sole disadvantage of this choice is that if the application does not satisfy the admissions requirements, it will be assigned a Waiting List B reference number.
- You may also apply to a specific school with a specialized emphasis (SOS).
- Finally, you may apply to any school that offers boarding.
2. Once you’ve finished the application page, you’ll want to click the “Apply” button to submit your application.
3. Following that, you will be issued a Waiting List reference number, which will be shown on the screen. The number is used to certify that your application was received. So, if you don’t get it, you may have to go over everything you’ve done so far.
It is important to note that as a parent, you have the option of applying again after receiving the Waiting List reference number.
By extension, once the page displaying the Waiting List reference number appears, you will see two options: “Apply again” and “Apply for another learner.”
If you choose the “Apply again” option, you will be able to reapply to a new school on behalf of the same student that you applied on behalf of the first time.
If, on the other hand, you choose the “Apply for another student” option, you will have to start the procedure all over again, but this time for a different learner. In this scenario, all of the previously mentioned processes may be repeated.
It is important to note at this time that there are three kinds of Waiting List reference numbers that you may be issued. They are as follows:
- WA, which indicates that the candidate is qualified for placement based on the admissions requirements of the school to which they applied.
- WB. This implies that the learner does not qualify for placement based on the admissions standards of the school to which he or she applied. In this case, the student should apply to another institution where there is a “WA” code waiting list.
- WAB. If you get this, it indicates that the system is having difficulty identifying the given address. In such a case, the school would evaluate the distance between their location and the address given to determine whether or not the student would benefit from it.

Conclusion
Based on what has been covered so far, the procedures involved in GDE admissions are not at all complex, despite the fact that anybody who does not understand the process may be inclined to believe otherwise.
Remember that, whether you are a South African or a non-South African, the papers that must be provided to the institution to which you are applying are critical. The reason for this is because it affects whether or not the child/admittance ward’s will be handled.
