An academic calendar serves as a reminder of important events for students, instructors, and staff during the academic year and semester.
Parents, alumni, and potential students all benefit from it. Every educational establishment has its academic calendar with specific dates on it.
There are generally two semesters per academic year in USA: Fall (beginning in August or September) and Spring (beginning in January).

Some semester-based schools also offer a summer session that is shorter than a regular semester and is not a part of the regular academic year.

Most universities and colleges usually run from early September until the end of April or early May. Often, this winter session is split into two terms running September to December and January to April. Various forms of summer studies may be offered May to August.
The PGCPS Calendar Committee meets each year to develop a calendar for the following school year. Members include teachers, parents, school administrators, union representatives and central office staff.
Over the course of several meetings, the committee develops a draft calendar to share with the executive team.
Once approved, the draft calendar is shared with families and employees for feedback through a survey. After final adjustments are made, the calendar is submitted to the Prince George’s County Board of Education for review and adoption.
The first day of school for all PGCPS students on the PGCPS calendar 2023-2024 is August 29, 2023. The last day of school is June 16, 2024. There are 180 student days of instruction in the 2022-2024 academic year including the state-mandated holidays/closures.
