The Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Job Ndugai resigned from the post today, Thursday, January 6, 2022.

According to a public statement, Ndugai stated that he had written a letter to the General Secretary of the Revolutionary Party (CCM) resigning, stating that he had made the decision to resign.

“I would like to inform the Tanzanian public that today, 06 January 2022, I have written a letter to the Secretary General of the Revolutionary Party (CCM) resigning the position of Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Tanzania” said part of the statement and added.

“I have also submitted my resignation copy to the parliamentary secretary for appropriate action in accordance with the country’s constitution and other laws,” Ndugai said in a statement to the public.

Ndugai, a Kongwa MP, said he thanked the MPs, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Government, the people of Kongwa State and all Tanzanians for the co-operation they gave him during his tenure as Speaker.

He has served as a member of parliament for the Kongwa constituency since 2000. Ndugai was named as the most active MP in the 9th Tanzanian Parliament.

Ndugai was Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 2010 to 2015. He was elected as Speaker of the National Assembly on 17 November 2015 November 2015 – January 6, 2022. He received 254 out of 365 votes, while opposition candidate Goodluck ole Medeye, a CHADEMA MP, received 109 votes, and there were two spoilt votes.
