OET Exam Pattern | ||
Sections | Test Duration | Description |
Listening | 40 minutes | Divided into 3 parts to test candidates’ listening abilities in various formats |
Reading | 60 minutes | Divided into 3 parts to test candidates’ reading abilities in various formats |
Writing | 45 minutes | Profession-specific, the OET writing section requires candidates to write a letter of reference |
Speaking | 20 minutes | Profession-specific, requiring candidates to enact a roleplay from a healthcare environment |
Each sub-test assesses the candidate’s language proficiency in a healthcare-specific context. Candidates must achieve a minimum score in each sub-test to pass the OET exam.
The minimum score may vary depending on the requirements of the regulatory body, hospital, or university to which the candidate is applying.

Frequently asked question (FAQs) about oet exam results
1. What is the passing grade for OET?
There is no passing or failing grade for OET, but most boards and councils require a score of at least 350 in order to consider a candidate for employment. To achieve this, candidates would need to perform well in all five of the criteria for each subtest.
2. Does USA accept OET for nurses?
ECFMG certifications are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, to obtain a license to practise from a Medical Licensing Authority. As OET is accepted in the US, the number of OET accepted countries is now 12.
3. How long is an OET valid for?
The OET certificates are valid for two years. If you are taking the PLAB test, your certificate must be valid on the day you sit PLAB part 1. If you are applying for registration with a licence to practise, it must be valid when we approve your application.
4. What is the hardest part of the OET exam?
It really comes down to individual strengths and weaknesses. However, our experience suggests maximum number of candidates retake the OET exam either due to writing or reading subtests. So, it’d be safe to assume OET candidates find writing and reading modules more difficult than speaking and listening.
5. How many questions are on the OET exam?
The OET has 42 questions in the Listening task in total, which is divided into 24 questions of Part A, six questions of Part B and 12 questions for Part C. For Part A, there are two audios of five minutes each which you are required to answer 24 questions ( 12 questions for each of the audios)
Five (5) important hints to help you pass exams:
- Start Early and Plan Your Time: Don’t leave your studying until the last minute. Begin preparing well in advance and create a study schedule that allows for consistent and organized learning. Spreading out your study sessions over time will help you retain information better and reduce last-minute cramming.
- Understand the Exam Format and Syllabus: Familiarize yourself with the exam format, including the types of questions and the time limits. Review the syllabus or study guide provided by your teacher to identify the key topics and concepts that will be covered in the exam. This knowledge will help you focus your studying on the most important areas.
- Review and Summarize: Regularly review your notes, textbooks, and other study materials. Summarize the main points and concepts in your own words. By reviewing and condensing information, you reinforce your understanding and make it easier to recall during the exam.
- Practice Past Exams and Sample Questions: Obtain past exam papers or sample questions and practice answering them under exam conditions. This will familiarize you with the types of questions that may be asked and help you manage your time effectively. Analyze your answers and learn from any mistakes or areas of weakness.
- Take Care of Yourself: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. A healthy body and mind contribute to better concentration, memory retention, and overall performance during exams. Avoid excessive stress and take breaks during your study sessions to avoid burnout.
Keep in mind that everyone has their own unique study methods, so it’s important to find what works best for you. Experiment with different techniques and strategies to discover what helps you learn and retain information effectively. Good luck with your exams!
